KT Wiz won 4-2 against Kiwoom in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 11. With the win, KT WIZ snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 35-2-41 on the season. Kiwoom, on the other hand, dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 38-2-44.
KT WIZ starting pitcher left-hander Wes Benjamin threw 99 pitches in 7.2 innings, allowing two runs, six hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts to earn his ninth win of the season. At the plate, Kim Min-hyuk, who batted leadoff and played right field, went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Kiwoom starter Ahn Woo-jin took the loss, throwing 120 pitches in 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, five hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts.
Four of the five games scheduled for the day were rained out due to heavy rains across the country. The only game to be played, between KT WIZ and Kiwoom, was a tense pitching battle throughout.
KT WIZ was the first team to strike first. KT WIZ opened the scoring in the first inning with a leadoff single to left field by Kim Min-hyuk. Kim Sang-soo followed with a double to right field, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Both teams then engaged in a tense pitching battle. Kiwoom starter Ahn Woo-jin was dominant through the fourth inning, retiring six straight batters and striking out eight. KT WIZ starting pitcher Benjamin also pitched a perfect game until the bottom of the fourth inning, completely shutting down the Kiwoom bats.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth, Kim Hye-sung singled to the left side of the infield and Lee Jung-hoo walked to put runners on first and second. Lim Ji-yeol then tied the game with an RBI double.
After conceding the tying run in the top of the fifth inning, KT WIZ fought back with Moon Sang-chul’s double to the back right of the left field fence. KT WIZ then brought in pinch-hitter Kang Baek-ho to bat in the designated hitter spot. However, Kang had to swallow his disappointment as he struck out swinging on a curveball from Ahn Woo-jin.
The tense balance collapsed in the top of the seventh inning. KT WIZ opened the scoring in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single to left by Park Byung-ho. When Jang Jang-woo grounded out to second base, Park Byung-ho reached second base.
In the next at-bat, Hwang Jae-gyun drew a walk to keep the momentum going. Lee Ho-yeon followed with an RBI single to make it 2-1 in favor of KT WIZ.
